Blackberry and Bramblewood
Cottages are just a quarter of a mile from Poughill, a
picturesque village dating from the back a thousand years,
and mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086.
It is has a cluster of
houses around the central focus of the village - with church and of course the village pub, which
also serves meals and coffee.

The 15th Century church of St Olaf in the village
Bude has a fine example of a 15th
Century Norman church with four spires to its tower, which is
peculiar to this part of the country.
It has a Norman font, a set of 78
carved bench-ends which depict the story of the Passion, and a
paintings from the 15th century.
Local
Shop:
There is a local shop just a 5 min walk from the cottages,
where you can buy papers, snacks, milk and other groceries, plus
fishing nets, buckets & spades and other 'must have' beach
items!
The Poughill
Revel and Cuckoo Fair
The Poughill Revel and Cuckoo Fair takes place in the centre of the
village. If you'd like to experience the traditional English village fete,
then do not miss this event! Everyone, including holiday makers and other visitors
are welcomed to the friendly atmosphere, with a mix of activities to try (archery, horse riding,
treasure hunts, and other children's games) and plenty of homemade cakes
and home-grown produce to sample.
Each of the villages around Bude have similar 'Revels', each on different
weeks. So you can visit similar events in the area whichever week you
choose to stay at Blackberry or Bramblewood Cottages throughout the summer. The Poughill
Revel is always on the first Thursday of August.
The culmination of all of these Revels is the Bude Carnival in late
August, where a large procession of floats arrives in town, each
carrying the May Queen and her deputies from each of the surrounding
village Revels.
The Poughill Revel
May Queen
The Revel is held in the centre of Poughill village, overlooking the sea.
Children can enter traditional races such as the
sack race and Egg & Spoon.
The tea tent serves Cornish Cream teas, and
houses several stalls such as the plants, cakes, and books.
Traditional stalls such as this revolving wooden
horse, compliment the more modern such as the BBQ!
